The bitter bark contains alkaloids and is used in the treatment of syphilis, scrofula and malaria. The wood is lustrous; the grain finely roey; the texture rather fine. It is very hard, heavy, tough, strong and very durable. It is easy to saw but rather difficult to finish, takes a high polish. It is used locally for general construction, sugar mills, railroad ties, carts, tool handles, bridge construction etc
